What is a “Barn Quilt”

Barn Quilts began as a way to honor those we love and tell a story of our place. The first was a large wood square, painted with a “Quilt Block” as the primary image, and then placed on a barn. Today, the Barn Quilt movement has evolved. You may hear them referred to as Quilts, Quilt Squares, or Barn Quilts.

When a group of people in a particular geographic area come together to add Barn Quilts to their home, barn, business, or another location that has meaning to them, they may become part of an organized quilt trail. The name of the trail may include the word barn in it, or it may simply be a Quilt Trail, like the one we are starting in Newberry County, South Carolina.

We are getting started…

In August of 2021, Marjorie Huwa gathered a group of people together to begin exploring the idea of a Newberry County Quilt Trail. Together, during the first meeting, they determined their mission and vision for the quilt trail.

On Saturday, October 23, 2021, a group gathered at the workshop of Nancy Burkhart of Earth Safe Finishes in Newberry, SC to begin painting the first quilts.

As we begin to hang the first quilts, our goal is to build a map here on the site. If you would like to stay connected to our progress, please share your email above. We will be sending news and events. We also plan to host barn quilt painting workshops. This is truly a community project.
